On August 31, 2016 at approximately 1:45pm, RCMP were called to a multi-vehicle collision at the intersection of Pipeline Road and Highway 101.
Early police investigation revealed that an eastbound 18-wheel semi-truck on Highway 101 failed to stop for a red light and collided with the driver’s side of a minivan traveling north on Pipeline Road. The impact spun both vehicles into oncoming westbound traffic on Highway 101. The semi then collided with a third vehicle, resulting in a collision with a fourth vehicle.
Police say that the driver and passenger of the minivan, residents of Oak Point, Manitoba, were transported to hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. A child, who was a passenger in the third vehicle, was transported to hospital with minor injuries and later released.
“Four deaths on Manitoba highways in less than 24 hours is a tragedy,” said Sgt. Doug Lukaway, Unit Commander for Headingly Traffic Services. “With the long weekend upon us, drive safe and if you’re at any sort of intersection, even if it’s lighted, look both ways. People get impatient and could jump the light. Pay attention to the big picture and the movement of traffic around you.”
RCMP report that alcohol is not considered a factor in this incident and that the investigation is ongoing.
