The annual Discover Agriculture in the City will have a new twist this year when it comes to The Forks Market this Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17, 2018.

This annual free event kicks off on Friday at 7pm when the public is invited to the market’s south aisle to test their knowledge of agriculture in a trivia contest, complete with prizes. The Warwaruk brothers of Farmery Estate Brewery, near Neepawa, will be there to tell about growing barley and hops right on their own farm, and brewing it right there, too.

Steffen Zinn from Red Ember Pizza will also be there to tell about sourcing local ingredients for his signature pizzas. And yes, there will be free samples from both businesses.

Saturday is Family Day, starting at noon with the University of Manitoba Food Fight in the south atrium, where students from the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences will unveil the new foods they have created to a panel of judges.

This will be followed by presentations from farmers and those in the industry – including Curtis McRae, a grain and cattle producer from St. Andrews, and a member of Keystone Agricultural Producers.

At the same time, hands-on activities for the whole family – including butter making, canola crushing, making power from potatoes, and looking at cattle production through virtual reality glasses – will take place in the tower atrium.

Want to know more about the foods you eat? How they’re produced? How they’re used in health-promoting products? It’s all at The Forks Market this weekend.
