Steinbach RCMP are once again getting a high number of calls or personal attendance at the Detachment from the public to report concerns about receiving calls from Revenue Canada about unpaid taxes that must be paid immediately or a warrant for their arrest will be issued.
Police say that the caller will ask you to pay using different methods such as a Money Transfer via Money Gram, Western Union, your own financial institution or through the purchase of ITune cards, Visa / Mastecards cards and lately via Bitcoins.
RCMP advise that if you receive such a call, you should immediately hang up. A voice mail may also be left on your phone asking that you contact them immediately and provide you with a contact number. Again, hang up do not call them back.
The public should be assured that the police will not be arresting for unpaid taxes. If anyone actually owes Revenue Canada money, they will contact you via mail with a notice of payment.
RCMP say that if you have suffered a financial loss, you may report to the police if you wish to do so. If you have not provided personal information or suffered a financial loss, you can report the call directly to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If you want to verify a call or email, you should contact the CRA directly at 1-800-959-8281 or login into the CRA’s website with the My Account Service.
