Two vehicle collisions resulting in death occurred this past weekend, once incident near Virden and the other in the RM of St. Francois Xavier, Manitoba.
On July 7, 2018, just after 2pm, Virden RCMP responded to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 83, approximately 10 kilometres south of Virden, Manitoba. Police say that a car had left the highway on the east side of the road, struck the ditch and rolled several times. The driver of the vehicle, a 42-year-old male, was not wearing his seatbelt. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased on scene. A 31-year-old male passenger was wearing his seatbelt and was uninjured in the collision. Both were from Canupawakpa Dakota First Nation. Alcohol and speed are suspected to be factors in the collision.
In another incident, on July 8, 2018, just after midnight, Headingley RCMP responded to a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 26 in the RM of St. Francois Xavier. Police investigation determined that the vehicle was traveling north into St. Francois Xavier when it veered onto the east shoulder. It then crossed over and struck the west ditch, where it rolled. Police say that a 28-year-old male from St. Francois Xavier was the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle. He was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the car. The man was then transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the collision, however it appears speed may have played a role.
Two RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionists attended the different scenes and are assisting with the ongoing investigations.
