The Manitoba government has released further details on the criteria and application process for police agencies to access $500,000 to implement projects that reduce crime.
“This new program is an innovative opportunity to fund new ways to reduce crime in our communities,” said Justice Minister Cliff Cullen. “Our government is focused on producing real results for Manitobans and we look forward to receiving project proposals that will make our communities safer.”
Over the next several weeks, police agencies will be able to submit requests through a proceeds of crime investment proposal. New projects that will build partnerships in the community, address service gaps and provide measurable results are eligible.
The deadline to submit applications is September 30. A small working group will evaluate funding requests, with decisions expected later this fall. All proposals must provide a realistic return on investment by showing how they will reduce crime.
The province’s investment in these projects is comprised of Manitoba’s share of forfeited funds from federally-prosecuted Criminal Code offences. The $500,000 program complements nearly $100,000 invested this year from the proceeds of crime fund on public safety initiatives, including nearly $30,000 for a province-wide gun amnesty that has resulted in the disposal of hundreds of weapons and ammunition.
“Our government will continue to invest in initiatives and programs that keep Manitobans safe,” said Cullen. “We look forward to working with police agencies across the province to achieve our shared goal of reducing crime for Manitoba families.”
