The Manager of the Canada West Swine Health Intelligence Network says biosecurity remains number one defense in controlling the spread of PED, Influenza and other diseases.
The goal of the Canada West Swine Health Intelligence Network is to help swine practitioners and producers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC improve swine health.
Information is gathered from swine health practitioners and laboratories is compiled and discussed quarterly and distributed to swine veterinarians and producers.
CWSHIN Manager Dr. Jette Christensen says, while fourth quarter data is now being gathered, the third quarter was a really good quarter.
It was quite obvious that, from all the reports, the laboratory reports and the survey that we had from the practitioners that the diseases were very well controlled in the third quarter of 2018. There wasn’t any big problems sticking out. Even the control of PED in Manitoba seemed to be progressing even though we’ve had a few outbreaks lately.
The only thing that was a little bit off in the third quarter was there were a couple of farms that had problems with the pandemic Influenza. It seemed to spread and maintain and cause a bit of grief even over summer where most Influenza types are easier to control. We concluded that biosecurity remains the number one issue, trying to control the spread of PED, Influenza and other diseases. It was a really good quarter.

Dr. Christensen notes fourth quarter data is now being gathered, will be discussed late this month and reports will be circulated in the first half of February.
