Work will soon begin to replace the Grassmere Drain structure on Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 9 in partnership with the RM of West St. Paul.
“The replacement of the Grassmere Drain culvert at PTH 9 is long overdue and is much needed for the West St. Paul community, as well as all those who commute on Main Street each and every day,” said Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler. “This project will not only enhance flood protection and improve drainage, but increase public safety.”
The existing culvert is over 100 years old and requires replacement. PTH 9 serves as a vital transportation crossing for local residents and businesses entering and exiting the City of Winnipeg from north of the Perimeter Highway. The design is being finalized and construction is expected to start this summer, with an anticipated completion date of fall 2020. The total project cost is estimated to be $7.6 million.
The Manitoba government is partnering with the RM of West St. Paul on two pedestrian bridges as part of the project. The costs of their design and construction are being shared by the province and the municipality.
“As mayor of West St. Paul, I really appreciate Minister Schuler’s strategic approach to addressing this drainage, flooding and public safety issue,” said Cheryl Christian, mayor, RM of West St. Paul. “By including two pedestrian bridges as part of the project, the people of West St. Paul will now have greater opportunities for pathways for active living.”
Schuler noted the province is consulting with the community to ensure minimal interruption to traffic and businesses in the area.
