As part of its new five year plan, the Canada West Swine Health Intelligence Network will focus on the creation of a swine health data repository.
The Canada West Swine Health Intelligence Network is the organization that coordinates the gathering, analysis and sharing of swine health information within the western region of Canada.
Canada West Swine Health Intelligence Network Manager Dr. Jette Christensen says, over the year that ended March 31st, CWSHIN developed a new five year plan.
We started to brand CWSHIN more clearly with a new logo, with new report layouts so it’s more recognizable. That was sort of our baseline. We started to plan a data repository, so a place or database that we can pull together the data from the veterinarians, from the laboratories, from abattoirs and that is sort of the jump off point for our five year plan.
The five year plan started really April 1st this year and that’s where we’re going forward. For the first year our main focus will be on fully developing that data repository so we will be able to more efficiently analyze the data from the different sources, compare what is going on in the laboratories. Is that something that we can recognize from the clinical impression that the veterinarians are giving us, is there something from outside that we’re beginning to see at our laboratories, so all of these analysis that we can put the data together and really get some value added for the information and data that we are getting in.

Dr. Christensen says hopefully we can get better analysis and better benchmarks which will allow a faster more efficient determination of changes in swine disease status.
