Ted Falk, Member of Parliament for Provencher, recently highlighted the Conservative plan to protect vulnerable Canadians by combatting human trafficking.
Currently, 95% of those trafficked in Canada are women and more than one in four of the victims are under the age of 18. Indigenous Canadians are disproportionately impacted, representing half of all victims.
When Justin Trudeau took office, he discontinued the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking – an initiative created under the previous Conservative government.
“Human trafficking is a heinous crime that victimizes the most vulnerable in our society,” said Falk. “While the Liberals stepped back from tackling human trafficking, traffickers certainly haven’t stopped victimizing Canadian women and children.”
Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer recently announced the Conservative plan to keep human traffickers off our streets. The four proposals announced include:
- Renewing the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking
- Updating the Criminal Code to reflect the international definition of human trafficking in the Palermo Protocol and help our justice system secure convictions
- Ensuring that human traffickers receive consecutive sentences for their crimes
- Ending automatic bail for those charged with human trafficking offences
“Conservatives have a strong plan to support survivors and get traffickers off our streets,” Falk said. “Canadians deserve to feel safe where they live, including here in southeast Manitoba, and to know that their government takes these horrendous crimes seriously.”
