Manitoba Pork has officially unveiled a new Hiring Handbook to help pork producers with the hiring process and a new Employee Manual for the workers they hire.

Two new resources for pork producers, a Hiring Handbook and an Employee Manual were introduced last week as part of Manitoba Pork’s 2016 Fall Meetings in Niverville and Portage la Prairie.

The two new tools were developed based on information gathered through a survey of independent pork producers last year.

Janice Goldsborough, the Human Resources and Training Coordinator with Manitoba Pork, says a lot of the producers surveyed were unsure about the hiring process, what it involves and what they can do to make it better.

The Hiring Handbook contains information on where to look for candidates, where can you advertise for jobs. I’ve put in some samples of job ads. Then it talks about the recruitment process, gathering your pool of applicants and then conducting the interview, what kind of questions can an you not ask. How do you do reference checks, how do you do an offer letter to make sure everything you’ve promised to your employee is covered off and they’re aware of what they’ve got.

From there the Employee handbook is a reference tool for the new hire. It’ll include information about statutory holidays, vacation. Right now it’s generic but it can be customized for each producer and it’s all the information. When a new person starts, they’re pretty overwhelmed.

By having a handbook, it’s something that they can refer back to afterwards if they forget about how much vacation they’re entitled to or if they have benefits, things like that.
