The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of a 30-year-old man following an interaction with Winnipeg Police officers in the north end of Winnipeg mid-afternoon on July 14, 2019.
On July 14, WPS notified the IIU of an incident occurring around 3:46 p.m. where officers observed a male, in the vicinity of Flora Avenue and Parr Street, who appeared to be armed and bleeding. A short foot pursuit ensued, which resulted in the apprehension of the male. Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service was called and an ambulance attended. The male was unresponsive and was transported to Health Sciences Centre where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
A team of IIU investigators was immediately deployed to the scene and the investigation commenced. Since this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
