A 30-year-old Winnipeg man has been sentenced to eight years in prison in connection to a police investigation that began in October of 2017.
On October 1, 2017, The RCMP Federal Serious and Organized Crime Unit, working in partnership with Canada Border Services Agency, initiated an investigation in relation to a parcel of powdered fentanyl destined for Winnipeg that was seized entering Canada through Vancouver.
On October 10, 2017, a search warrant was subsequently obtained under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and executed at a residence in Winnipeg, where 49 grams of fentanyl powder was seized.
RCMP report that 30-year-old Corey Slotta of Winnipeg was arrested and charged. On July 15, 2019, Slotta was convicted of importation of fentanyl and sentenced to eight years in prison.
RCMP remind the public that fentanyl is a synthetic opiod which is 100 times more potent than morphine. A lethal dose of fentanyl is as little as two milligrams and any quantity of fentanyl needs to be handled with extreme care. The drugs seized in this incident are equal to 24,500 potential fatal doses.
