On November 2, 2016, at approximately 5:30pm, Shoal Lake and Hamiota RCMP responded to a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 355, about five kilometres west of Highway 83, near Birdtail Sioux First Nation, Manitoba.
When officers arrived on scene, two females were found ejected from the vehicle. It was unclear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident. Police believe that the car was traveling west on Highway 355 when it entered the north ditch, rolling several times as a result.
Police say that a 31-year-old woman was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident. The other person, a 25-year-old female, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. She remains in stable condition. Both victims were from Birdtail Sioux First Nation.
RCMP report that speed and alcohol are considered to be contributing factors in this collision. Seatbelts were not in use at the time of the collision.
Virden RCMP and Dakota Ojibway Police Service both assisted with the initial investigation. An RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist and the Criminal Collision Investigation Team are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
