The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of a 27-year-old male following his arrest by Winnipeg police.
On October 1, 2019, the IIU was notified by the Winnipeg Police Service of an incident that took place around 12:42am on September 23, 2019. Officers responded to a well-being call in the area of Assiniboine Avenue and Kennedy Street concerning a male who seemed confused and was yelling. Once located on the riverbank, the man confronted police and officers used force in attempting to take him into custody. The man became unresponsive and was transported to St. Boniface Hospital in critical condition, where he was later listed in stable condition. The male died in hospital on September 30th at 6:58 a.m.
The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with section 65(1) of The Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
