The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into whether a member of the Selkirk RCMP traffic division committed the Criminal Code offence of theft under $5,000.
Following the investigation, the officer will not face any charge.
In December 2018, RCMP advised the IIU it was investigating a number of suspicious credit card transactions by one of its members at the Selkirk Co-op Gas Bar and Carwash. It was alleged that a member of the Selkirk traffic division purchased a number of car washes with an RCMP-issued credit card, then redeemed the car wash purchases on a personal vehicle. IIU monitored the RCMP investigation. In February 2019, the IIU civilian director determined it was in the public interest for the IIU to assume conduct of the investigation.
The IIU investigation revealed a number of deficiencies in the available evidence and concluded there were insufficient grounds to believe the officer had committed an offence. IIU referred the matter back to the RCMP to be dealt with in accordance with its policies and processes.
