The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a 39-year-old male that resulted in him sustaining a serious injury.
On December 19, 2019, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) advised the IIU of an incident that occurred at approximately 5:44 a.m. that same day. Officers were responding to a call for service on Ellice Avenue. Upon arrival it was determined that a male should be transported to hospital for medical attention. While attempting to transport him, the male became belligerent, a struggle ensued with attending officers and force was used to arrest him. The male was subsequently conveyed to Health Sciences Centre where he was treated for a fractured orbital socket and admitted for observation.
An injury requiring admission to hospital is defined as a serious injury under IIU regulations, so the IIU is mandated to investigate.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
