The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating a death in police presence that occurred on February 10, 2020.
On February 10, 2020, IIU was notified by the Winnipeg Police Services of a domestic dispute that occurred involving a male armed with a knife. While officers attempted to diffuse the situation, the male suffered self-inflicted wounds and was transported to the hospital by EMS.
The male was pronounced deceased at Health Sciences Centre.
The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with section 65(4) of The Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
