Postponed – Given ongoing developments in terms of COVID-19 and following social distancing advice outlined by the Province of Manitoba, organizers have decided to postpone Discover Agriculture in the City, originally scheduled for Saturday March 14 at The Forks, as a precaution. A new date will be determined for late Spring 2020.
Did you know Manitoba is the largest fruit producing province in Canada? Or that 4,800 acres of vegetables are grown here every year? How about that canola was created right here in Winnipeg?
On Saturday, March 14, The Forks Market will be transformed into a hands-on event celebrating where our food comes from and the people that help get it to our tables, as the annual Discover Agriculture in the City event showcases the best of Manitoba agriculture and the agri-food sector.
The free event kicks off at 10 am in the south aisle with a wide range of interactive exhibits on display and the opportunity to meet Manitoba farmers until 4pm. The University of Manitoba Food Fight will showcase new foods created by students right here in our province and will be presented to a panel of judges.
Hands-on displays include the chance to make your own butter, crush made-in-Manitoba canola, and solve a puzzle to determine where your favourite cuts of pork come from. A free photo booth will allow participants to share our event on social media and take a physical copy of the photo home as well.
Canada’s agriculture and agri-food industry contributed over $143 billion to Canada’s GDP in 2018 and employs 2.3 million people across the country, including almost 15,000 in the City of Winnipeg alone. Manitoba is home to 24 agri-food research and development centres, and our province leads the way in providing cutting edge technology and skills to the entire agriculture sector.
