As a result of a 911 call, two Winnipeg men were fined and are facing numerous charges, including impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
On June 6, 2020, at approximately 8:05pm, Selkirk RCMP received a report of dangerous driving stating that a vehicle was traveling the wrong way on Highway 8 in the RM of St. Andrews.
Police say that the witness was on the line with a 911 call taker and continued to provide updates. The witness stated that the vehicle was swerving all over the road. At one point the vehicle was reported to have stopped, leaving time for the passenger and driver to switch positions and continue driving.
Officers were able to locate the vehicle on Highway 8, just south of Highway 27. A traffic stop was conducted and the 38-year-old male driver and 33-year-old male passenger, both from Winnipeg, were arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
“It is so important to call police when you witness dangerous driving, this caller was able to safely provide updates which enabled police to quickly locate and stop this vehicle”, said Sgt. Darrell Catellier of Selkirk RCMP. “This could have easily had a very tragic outcome, so we thank the caller and all the other witnesses that assisted us.”
RCMP report that both occupants of the vehicle are facing charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation with a blood alcohol concentration that is equal to or exceeds 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. The men were also fined under the Highway Traffic Act and the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Act.
