The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into an allegation that an off-duty RCMP officer assaulted his child, and has determined there is no evidence an assault occurred.
On December 6, 2019, RCMP received a report that an off-duty officer had assaulted his child by striking the child once on the arm. The allegation of assault was disclosed to the mother of the child and to a worker with Child and Family Services (CFS). A subsequent doctor’s examination found a bruise and abrasion on the child’s arm.
Although the notification did not disclose a serious injury, the civilian director determined it to be in the public interest for the IIU to investigate. Information obtained by IIU investigators included:
- the RCMP investigation and general report
- witness officer notes and report
- civilian witness statements
- a prepared statement from the subject officer
- medical records and reports for the affected child
- a CFS memorandum on its investigation and conclusions
Both the Child and Family Services investigation and the IIU investigation concluded, independently, that there was no evidence an assault occurred.
The IIU investigation is now complete and the file is closed. The details of this investigation were first announced on December 13, 2019.
