The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a 60-year-old male that resulted in him sustaining a serious injury.
On July 22, 2020, the RCMP reported an incident to the IIU that occurred at approximately 7:19pm on July 21 near Riding Mountain National Park. According to the RCMP notification, officers responded to a call for service regarding a domestic incident. The male suspect locked himself inside the residence and refused to comply with police orders. The Emergency Response Team (ERT) was dispatched to the location and around 3:27 a.m. on July 22, the male surrendered and was taken to the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot injury. He was transported to Health Sciences Centre where he remains.
As the injuries sustained required admission to a hospital on an in-patient basis and also involve an injury caused by the discharge of a firearm, under IIU regulations the IIU is mandated to investigate.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
