The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident that occurred on Sandy Bay First Nation resulting in a female sustaining serious injuries during her arrest.
On August 13, 2020, RCMP notified the IIU of an incident occurring that same day involving the arrest of several individuals. During the course of the arrest, suspects fled from the area. A police service dog was used to apprehend two of the suspects. During the course of their arrest, the two suspects sustained dog bites, and they were subsequently transported to Portage Hospital for treatment. One individual required surgery as a result of the dog bite.
As a burn, cut or laceration that require admission to a hospital on an in-patient basis is defined as a serious injury under the IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
