The Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) toured the Eastern District of the province this week and met with local Councils from a number of municipalities, including Steinbach.
The AMM delegation visited the Municipality of Emerson-Franklin, RM of Ritchot, RM of La Broquerie, RM of Hanover, Village of St-Pierre-Jolys, City of Steinbach, and RM of Montcalm.
“Based on our discussions, local Councils stressed the importance of amending Bill 48 since its current wording may slow our economic recovery,” stated AMM President Ralph Groening. “Protecting local decision-making will ensure Manitoba municipalities will continue to be among the fastest growing in Canada.”
“Several Councils also inquired about the status of their applications under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). Municipalities have identified shovel-worthy projects and stand ready to lead our province’s economic recovery,” noted Stan Toews, Reeve of the RM of Hanover and AMM Eastern District Director.
“In the context of the ongoing pandemic, municipalities are not immune to COVID-19 impacts. It is clear from meeting one-on-one with local Councils that provincial-federal recovery plans must support all municipalities by providing immediate financial and economic relief,” added Melanie Parent, Councillor from the RM of Piney and AMM Eastern District Director.
Members of the AMM delegation included President Ralph Groening, Vice-Presidents Brad Saluk and Kam Blight, Eastern District Directors Stan Toews and Melanie Parent, and Executive Director Denys Volkov.
The AMM makes it a priority to visit each of its member municipalities at least once during each four-year election cycle and represents all 137 municipalities in the province.
