The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal motor vehicle collision in Winnipeg.
On September 26, 2020, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) advised the IIU of an incident that occurred at 1:33 p.m. According to the notification, a WPS traffic unit attempted a traffic stop. The suspects fled in their vehicle, which collided with a vehicle carrying four individuals at the intersection of Boyd Avenue and Andrews Street moments later. All individuals involved in the collision were conveyed to various hospitals. One of the adult passengers in the vehicle that was struck has since succumbed to her injuries.
The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with section 66(4) of The Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
