The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of a 40-year-old man following his arrest by Winnipeg Police Service (WPS).

On November 4, 2020, WPS reported an incident to IIU that occurred earlier today. According to WPS, at approximately 1:00 a.m., a male was arrested during a traffic stop in the lane of Talbot Avenue in Winnipeg in relation to drug offences. The male was taken into custody, transported to WPS Central Processing Unit and placed under observation.  At approximately 3:11 a.m., the male was observed to be in medical distress and unresponsive. First aid was administered. The male was transported to St. Boniface hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with section 65(1) of The Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
