A Portage la Prairie RCMP was recently stabbed while arresting a drugged woman near a residence located in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
On December 26, 2020, at approximately 9:30am, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a residence located on Wilkinson Crescent in the City of Portage la Prairie.
An officer responded to the residence and located a 40-year-old female walking on Crescent Road East. The officer approached the female suspect and immediately observed that she was not dressed appropriately for the cold weather and that she may be under the influence of a drug. The officer then attempted to ascertain if she needed assistance.
Police say that the female was not able to properly respond to questions regarding herself or her identity.
The woman then attempted to flee police, but stumbled and fell to the ground. She was then placed under arrest, but resisted as the officer attempted to gain control of her.
During the arrest, the officer suddenly felt a sharp pain in his right thigh and realized he had been stabbed. The officer was able to gain control of the woman and during the search, located a capped needle and a large homemade knife which had been tucked into her waistband.
Police say that other officers arrived on scene to provide assistance and took the female into custody. The injured officer was able to drive himself to the hospital where he was treated and released.
RCMP report that the female suspect remains in police custody at this time and will face charges of assaulting a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
