The Manitoba Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), is taking the lead on an investigation that accuses a Manitoba RCMP officer of intentionally striking a dog while driving a police vehicle.

On January 7, 2021, RCMP Manitoba North District officers received a report that an on-duty RCMP officer, driving a police vehicle, intentionally struck a dog sitting on the roadway at a location in the community of Pukatawagan, Manitoba.

RCMP reported that the condition of the dog is unknown as efforts to locate the dog after the incident were unsuccessful.

Senior officers immediately began investigating the serious allegations, and on January 11, 2021, RCMP advised the Manitoba Independent Investigation Unit.

On January 12, 2021, RCMP were informed that the IIU would assert its jurisdiction and be the lead investigative agency in this matter.

According to RCMP, the officer in question has not returned to the community and has been placed on administrative duties. As well, a Code of Conduct investigation into this matter has begun.

RCMP say that they take this incident very seriously and support the IIU’s investigation. RCMP have dogs that are an important part of investigative teams and many officers work with rescue groups to help animals find homes.

Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
