A 27-year-old Sandy Bay First Nation first nation man is facing a multitude of firearms and drug related charges after Portage la Prairie RCMP conducted a traffic stop, seizing firearms and open liquor in the process.
On February 8, 2021, at approximately 9:30pm, an officer from the Portage la Prairie RCMP Detachment was patrolling on Saskatchewan Avenue West in Portage la Prairie. During the patrol, the officer observed a car with no licence plates traveling west on Saskatchewan Avenue at 5th Street NW. As the vehicle passed, the officer noticed that the vehicle did not have rear taillights illuminated.
Police say that the vehicle was stopped at Lorne Avenue and 8th Street NW. The male driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, had no identification or licence while providing a false name to the officer.
During the incident, two shotgun shells were observed laying behind the driver’s seat of the car. As a result, the car was searched and two loaded firearms were found. Also discovered during the search was an extendable baton, which is classified as a prohibited weapon.
The male suspect was then taken to the detachment where police were able to positively identify him. Once identified, it was discovered that the male was on conditions to not possess firearms or alcohol, as well to abide by a curfew.
