On August 11, 2021, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) notified the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of an incident that occurred on August 1, 2019, concerning an allegation of excessive use of force by two RCMP members during an arrest of a male suspect at the James Richardson International Airport. The circumstances of this incident came to light during the course of a trial in Provincial Court on August 5 and 6, 2021. That trial continues and is scheduled to resume on August 30, 2021.
While the civilian director has determined that public interest demands that an independent investigation be undertaken by IIU in this matter, as the trial remains before the courts, no further details of the incident or comments will be made at this time.
