Manitobans and visitors to the province are encouraged to participate in a weekend of free ice fishing during this year’s Winter Family Fishing Weekend from Feb. 18 to 20, 2017.
“Manitoba has a great tradition of quality ice fishing, a leisure activity that both Manitobans and visitors to our province look forward to participating in every winter,” Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox said. “We are excited to continue the tradition of Winter Family Fishing Weekend and encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to participate once again or try ice fishing for the first time. It is a great way to spend a winter day with family or friends and there are endless opportunities throughout our province to get a line in the water.”
Anglers will be able to fish without a licence province-wide this weekend. Conservation limits will apply and a federal licence will still be required to fish in national parks, the minister noted. Anglers are reminded to be sure conditions are safe before venturing onto the ice. It is important to let someone know where you are fishing and to wear appropriate clothing so the ice-fishing experience will be enjoyable, Cox said.
