Steinbach RCMP are reporting that Mack, a Police Service Dog (PSD), was recently injured in a search incident after being attacked by a large 90 pound dog at a location in the Rural Municipality of Hanover.
At approximately 11am on September 3, 2021, Steinbach RCMP officers, along with Police Dog Services and the Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST), executed a search warrant at a location in the Rural Municipality of Hanover. The search warrant was in relation to a stolen property investigation.
As officers were approaching a building on the property, a dog, weighing approximately 90 pounds, attacked PSD Mack. Officers attempted to protect PSD Mack, but were unable to pry off the attacking dog. In order to prevent further injury to PSD Mack and to the officers that were assisting, the attacking dog was shot and died on scene.
RCMP report that PSD Mack was taken to a veterinarian for non-life threatening injuries to his face and shoulder. Two officers also sustained minor injuries while trying to protect Mack.
Police say that the suspect, a 41-year-old man from the RM of Hanover, was arrested without further incident. The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified of the incident.
