The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating circumstances surrounding the arrest of an adult male by the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) that resulted in him sustaining serious injuries.
On October 20, 2021, the WPS advised the IIU of an incident that occurred on July 29, 2021. According to the notification, WPS advised they received correspondence from the Law Enforcement Review Agency (LERA) on October 18, advising that, as a result of a complaint they received, LERA had secured medical evidence that indicated the male suffered fractures to his ribs, clavicle, scapular as well as a collapsed lung as a result of the incident.
As the injuries sustained are defined as serious injuries under the IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
