The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into the alleged serious injury of a male suspect by the RCMP dating back to June of 2021.
According to the notification received on June 22, 2021, the RCMP arrested the affected person (AP) following a wellness check at a residence in Souris on June 8. Following a conversation with the complainant, it was determined no offence had taken place, and the suspect was released. The AP later complained to the RCMP that his ribs were broken during the arrest.
When contacted by IIU investigators, the AP advised he had not sought medical care for any injuries. He also advised it was his preference to deal with the RCMP Civilian Review and Complaints Commission (CRCC), and not the IIU.
The report finds there is no evidence that would substantiate the allegation that AP sustained broken ribs following his interaction with RCMP officers. In addition, there is no need to complete an independent investigation to serve the public interest.
The IIU investigation is now closed. The details of this investigation were first announced on June 25, 2021.
