The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the death of a male that occurred in police presence on January 28, 2022 in Tadoule Lake.
On January 28, the RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that occurred earlier that day. According to the notification, on January 27, RCMP officers responded to reports regarding multiple assaults and a male with a firearm in Tadoule Lake.
Officers attended the scene and were unable to locate the male suspect.
On January 28, RCMP received information that the male suspect was outside a nearby residence. RCMP officers responded and located the suspect with a firearm.
While officers were on scene, the male suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The male was then transported to the nursing station by the RCMP where he was pronounced deceased.
The IIU has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the death of the male in accordance with section 65(1) of the Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, the IIU has requested a civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission.
