The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating circumstances surrounding a serious injury sustained by an adult male during an interaction with Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers.
On February 18, 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) reported an incident to the IIU that occurred on February 17. According to the notification, on February 17 at approximately 10:17pm, police officers attended a residence on Carriage Road in response to a call for service.
Upon arrival, a male became belligerent and aggressive with police and force was used to subdue him. The male was taken into custody and subsequently transported to hospital, where it was determined that he had sustained a fractured humerus. As this is a serious injury as defined by regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
