Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is reporting that an RCMP officer is facing assault charges in connection to a number of incidents that occurred in 2021.
On July 12, 2021, the IIU received a notification from the RCMP regarding an allegation of assault that occurred on July 10 by an on-duty RCMP officer in Selkirk. The civilian director of the IIU is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred and has authorized a charge.
On November 23, 2021, the IIU received a notification from the RCMP regarding a motor vehicle collision that took place on November 7, 2021, on Mayfair Avenue in Winnipeg involving an off-duty RCMP officer. The civilian director is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred and has authorized a charge in this investigation.
As a result of these investigations, Cst. Erik Grimolfson has been issued a summons for June 10, 2022, in Selkirk Provincial Court for assault cause bodily harm, contrary to s. 267(b) of the Criminal Code, and for June 6, 2022, in Winnipeg Provincial Court for assault, contrary to s. 266 of the Criminal Code.
The IIU issued news releases on July 15 and November 29, 2021, respectively, advising it had launched investigations into these incidents.
