The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating a death in police presence that recently occurred in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
On May 14, 2022, IIU was notified by the Winnipeg Police Service of a domestic dispute that occurred earlier that day involving a male armed with a knife. While officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, the male suffered a self-inflicted wound. A Taser was deployed in an attempt to subdue the male. The male was transported to Health Sciences Centre by EMS, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with section 65(4) of the Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
