The provincial government is encouraging all Manitobans to participate in Earth Hour 2017 on Saturday, March 25 from 8:30 to 9:30pm.
“Participation in Earth Hour is one small and easy way to make a difference for our environment,” Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox said. “On behalf of the government, I encourage all Manitobans to participate and show their support by turning off their lights for one hour tomorrow evening.”
Launched a decade ago as an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund in Australia, Earth Hour encourages all citizens to think globally and act locally. The minister noted all it takes to participate is for people to turn off their lights between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. to conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and raise awareness about environmental issues.
The minister said the provincial government will participate by turning off non-essential lights in government-owned provincial buildings. All provincial employees are asked to turn off computers, monitors and lights in workplaces before leaving at the end of the week, and are invited to participate at home as well.
Individuals can sign up to participate and find more information on how this event is being celebrated around the world at www.earthhour.org.
