The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into allegations against a Brandon Police Service (BPS) officer.

On April 25, 2022, BPS notified the IIU about an incident that allegedly occurred between Feb. 9 and 13, 2022, during the transport of a Mental Health Act patient from the BPS headquarters to Brandon General Hospital.

According to an excerpt of this notification, the affected person alleged a BPS member handcuffed her so tightly that her hand turned purple during transfer and that the same BPS officer shoved her to the floor at Brandon General Hospital.

As the matter concerned an allegation of assault, a discretionary matter under the provisions of the Police Services Act, the civilian director determined it was in the public interest to investigate.

IIU investigators met with and interviewed the affected person and viewed video surveillance footage from the BPS headquarters and in-car sources from Feb. 12, 2022.

The civilian director was not satisfied there was any substance to the allegations and determined it was not necessary to designate any BPS officer as a witness or subject officer.

The details of this investigation were first announced on May 6, 2022.
