On August 11, 2021, Manitoba RCMP notified the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of an incident which occurred on August 1, 2019 concerning an allegation of excessive use of force by two RCMP members during an arrest of a male suspect at the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.
The civilian director is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred and has authorized a charge of assault under section 266 of the Criminal Code against one of the officers involved.
As a result of the investigation, Cst. Eric Gerein has been issued a summons for September 26 in Winnipeg Provincial Court for assault contrary to s. 266 of the Criminal Code.
The IIU first advised it had launched an investigation into this matter on August 11, 2021.
