The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating an incident that concluded in a fatal motor vehicle collision at Grey Street and Munroe Avenue in Winnipeg.
On September 13, 2022, Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on September 12 around 11:30 p.m. while officers were patrolling in the area of Munroe Avenue. According to the notification, WPS officers observed a vehicle when it began to accelerate northbound on Grey Street. Officers observed a second vehicle stopped at a four-way stop and activated emergency equipment in hopes of averting a collision. The two vehicles collided and the first vehicle struck a hydro pole. WPS immediately attended to the collision scene. Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service attended and transported all individuals to Health Sciences Centre. A male driver and a male passenger from the first vehicle were transported in unstable condition. A third male passenger was transported in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the second vehicle did not sustain any injuries.
The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with section 66(4) of the Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor has been made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
