Selkirk RCMP are reporting that a 19-year-old Winnipeg man has been arrested and charged in connection to an accidental shooting incident that occurred on a rural property located off Road 84 N, north of Selkirk near Highway 59.
On September 24, 2022, at approximately 12:55pm, Selkirk RCMP received a report regarding the accidental shooting of a 19-year-old Winnipeg man.
Police say that the victim had been accidentally shot while he and his three friends, all from Winnipeg, were target shooting on a rural property located north of Selkirk. The victim was subsequently transported to Winnipeg hospital with non-life threatening injuries, where he remains in stable condition.
Preliminary investigation determined that the four individuals had been shooting at targets from a distance of approximately 25 metres in a grassy area off of a side road. The victim reportedly began walking towards the targets and was struck as a result.
RCMP report that the 19-year-old male suspect, who had fired the shot, was arrested and later released him for a future court appearance in Selkirk. The suspect is now facing charges of careless use of a firearm, discharge of a firearm while being reckless and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Selkirk RCMP noted that officers located and seized four rifles and ammunition at the scene.
