The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of a male following his arrest by the RCMP in Selkirk, Manitoba.
On October 24, 2022, RCMP reported an incident to IIU that occurred around 7pm. According to the notification, a male was taken into custody under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act on October 23 around 3:15am, transported to Selkirk RCMP detachment and lodged in cells. While the male was in custody other matters came to light that resulted in further detention. On October 24 at approximately 7:10pm, officers responded to an alarm in the cell where the male was found unresponsive. He was transported to Selkirk Regional Health Centre by EMS and declared deceased.
The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with Section 65(1) of the Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
