The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into an allegation of a driving offence against an on-duty member of the RCMP.
On October 12, 2022, RCMP notified the IIU of an allegation of an on-duty officer operating a police vehicle at excessive speed without lawful justification to do so. According to the notification, the officer was observed driving at an excessive speed westbound into the city of Brandon on the Trans-Canada Highway on October 6, 2022.
The civilian director determined it was in the public interest for the IIU to investigate and information obtained by IIU investigators included:
- RCMP occurrence summary;
- vehicle status;
- general reports; and
- surveillance video from a restaurant/gas bar.
Following the completion of the investigation, it was determined that the available evidence was insufficient to identify the operator of the unmarked police vehicle with any certainty. Accordingly, there are no grounds to support the designation of anyone as a subject officer. The evidence of the only witness to the alleged incident was inconclusive, confusing and unable to be corroborated.
Accordingly, there was no basis to continue with the investigation.
The details of the investigation were first announced on October 14, 2022.
