Manitoba RCMP are reporting that two people are facing charges related to the unlawful transport and sale of liquor. The incidents resulted in the seizure of alcohol and drug related items.
On January 25, 2023, as a result of an ongoing investigation into the private sale of liquor in Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation , Nelson House RCMP executed a search warrant under the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act at a residence located in the community.
As a result of the search, officers located an undisclosed quantity of liquor, numerous empty water bottles used to sell the product, a safe, a quantity of dried cannabis and trafficking related paraphernalia.
Police say that a 51-year-old female, from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, is awaiting charges under the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act.
On February 3, 2023, Wabowden RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle rollover, with possible injuries, on Highway 6, located approximately six kilometres south of Ponton.
Officers attended the scene and located three occupants in the vehicle who declined medical attention. As assistance was being provided in removing belongings from the vehicle, officers observed several bottles of liquor where an attempt was made to conceal them.
In speaking with the occupants, they advised that they were headed to God’s Lake Narrows where the possession and sale of liquor is prohibited. A further search of the vehicle led to the seizure of an additional large quantity of liquor.
RCMP report that a 30-year-old female, from God’s Lake Narrows, was charged under the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act and fined $2,542.
Manitoba RCMP are committed to working with First Nation communities that have enacted by-laws to prohibit the sale and possession of alcohol and have asked to make enforcement a priority. These enforcement actions will continue as per the expressed wishes of community leadership.
