The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating circumstances surrounding a medical incident following the detention of an adult male that occurred on October 4, 2023.
On October 5, the Steinbach Royal Mounted Canadian Police (RCMP) reported an incident to the IIU that occurred at 7am that same day. According to the notification, an adult male was detained and held in custody after being found blocking traffic and lying on the ground on October 4. On October 5, the male was released from RCMP custody at 5:30am.
Within a few hours, RCMP responded to a report from Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Police learned that the same adult male had been located in medical distress in the 100 block of Penfeld Drive. The male is currently receiving treatment at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg.
The civilian director has determined it is in the public interest for the IIU to investigate.
