The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) recently notified the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) of an incident resulting in a serious injury. According to the notification, on December 21 at 3:05pm, members of the WPS received a call for service concerning suspicious circumstances, to the 1500 block of Ross Avenue West. Officers received information that the occupant of the address, an adult male, was wanted on three outstanding warrants of arrest.
Responding officers attended to the area of Keewatin Street and Pacific Avenue where, at approximately 3:27pm, they observed the suspect walking in the company of an unknown female. When officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, the male fled eastbound on Pacific Avenue, but was caught after a short foot pursuit. The male resisted arrest and a use of force encounter occurred where a conducted energy weapon was deployed. The male was taken into custody. The male complained of shortness of breath and dizziness, and paramedics were called to the scene. He was transported to the Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg for treatment and it was later determined that he had two fractured ribs.
Give the injuries meet the definition of a ‘serious injury’ under IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
