Steinbach RCMP are reporting that a 51-year-old male from the Ste. Anne area has died after being shot by an officer in an assault incident occurring near La Broquerie, Manitoba.
On May 24, 2024, at approximately 12:30am, Steinbach RCMP were patrolling on Highway 52, near La Broquerie, after receiving numerous reports of a suspicious male in the area.
While patrolling, officers discovered a vehicle stopped on the highway and observed a male suspect standing by the driver-side door. As officers approached, they saw the man was reaching into the vehicle and assaulting the female driver while holding an edged weapon.
Police say that the suspect was ordered step away, at which point he approached the officers with the weapon. Despite orders to drop the weapon, the man continued towards officers resulting in an officer discharging their firearm.
Officers provided medical aid to the male suspect until Emergency Medical Services arrived. The 51-year-old male from the Ste. Anne area was subsequently pronounced deceased on scene.
RCMP report that the female victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the assault.
Members noted that RCMP Major Crime Services has taken carriage of the police investigation with the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba engaged and providing oversight.
The investigation is ongoing.
