Portage la Prairie RCMP are reporting that a 39-year-old male suspect was recently arrested and charged after the man made an attempt to flee police in his vehicle at a location on Highway 1.

On June 10, 2024, at approximately 6pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP officers were on the lookout for a stolen vehicle out of the Selkirk area which was heading towards the Portage la Prairie area.

Officers on patrol located the stolen vehicle driving dangerously, and at high speeds on Highway 1 near Highway 240, in the RM of Portage la Prairie. For the safety of motorists, traffic was stopped by the Portage diversion and officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The stolen vehicle refused to stop, nearly striking an RCMP officer in the process. The suspect then drove through the ditch in an attempt to flee, but got stuck in the process.

Police say that the driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, was eventually arrested.

RCMP report that 39-year-old Tommy Ste-Croix has been charged with flight from police, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime and failing to comply.
