A 21-year-old male suspect has been arrested and charged in connection to a recent series of violent offences that occurred in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
On June 24, 2024, at approximately 9:20pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to an assault with a weapon at a location outside of a residence on Meighen Avenue, in the community.
It was reported that the victim, a 65-year-old man, was loading up his truck, when the suspect, armed with a crowbar, approached him and demanded his truck. The suspect then struck the victim with the crowbar, stole the truck and fled. Members noted that the victim did not require medical attention.
As officers were en route, multiple calls were received with updates on the stolen truck. It was reported that the suspect was driving erratically and causing damage to a number of properties.
The stolen truck was soon after located by officers a short distance away, damaged and abandoned.
Police say that as the area was being contained, they received a call of a home invasion on Wilkinson Crescent. Officers learned that a male had broken into the home, threatened the homeowner and attempted to steal his vehicle.
As police were arriving on scene at the home invasion, the male suspect was seen in the backyard of the residence and fled on foot. The male then jumped into Crescent Lake and swam to the other side. An officer located the suspect hiding and he was arrested without incident.
RCMP report that 21-year-old Landan Beaulieu, of Dakota Tipi First Nation, is now facing numerous assault and theft related charges in connection to this incident. He was remanded into custody.
